Human Powered Vehicles – Bike Trikke Skateboard

By Action Isle • Feb 20th, 2010 • Category: Articles

When you think of human powered vehicles what comes to mind? Most will think of different forms of bikes. There is the bicycle, unicycle, and tricycle. Did you also consider these vehicles? Consider these the canoe, ice skates, roller skates, kick scooter, skis, trikke and skateboard. All of which are fun to use and our powered by muscular movement on our part.

For most of us the very first vehicle we drove ourselves was not an automobile. It was most likely some from of transportation powered by yourself and not a motor. It was nothing fancy just another way to get from here to there. In most cases it probably wasn't even faster than we could have done crawling or walking, but it sure was fun. This vehicle was called a tricycle: a simple 3-wheeled contraption that used handle bars atop a rotating front wheel to steer and was powered by your very own legs.

Once you mastered the use of your tricycle you were ready for the big time, a bicycle. Now this was much faster and more challenging than a tricycle. The transition went smoothly as it came with the subtraction of one back wheel, but was accompanied by the addition of two training wheels. Then when you were ready you could remove the training wheels and after a few falls you were off and loving it.

Then you got a car and transportation would never be the same again. That care free joyous feeling is gone. With a car came much more responsibility and more expenses. Now you had to worry about car insurance bills, tune ups, maybe tickets, cleanings, and the most lethal of expenses now gas prices. Gas prices are hovering around $3.00 per gallon.

It has never been cheaper and more beneficial to go back to those self human powered vehicles that we all loved so much growing up. Growing up self powered vehicles were used strictly for recreational proposes. Now as adults why not use self powered vehicles for those short journeys? Not only is it beneficial financially, but also is a good source of exercise.

Pumgo Skateboard: No Kicking Required

By Action Isle • Mar 17th, 2009 • Category: Everything Else

The Pumgo skateboard is a kick-less skateboard where the rider pumps the board back and forth to propel themselves forward.

It kind of looks like a seesaw for your feet.

Apparently the Pumgo is not only fun to ride, but it also gives your core muscles a great workout.

Riding it requires core strength to remain balanced while pumping the Pumgo back and forth.

SoulArc Surf Emulating Skateboard

By Action Isle • Nov 11th, 2008 • Category: Boards

The SoulArc board is made to simulate surfing on land. Other boards that emulating surfing do a good job mimicking one aspect of surfing, but fail at others. This board mimics an aspect of surfing that is often lost when riding a board on land. The design of the SoulArc makes carving feel more like it is being done on water then land. The board gives and lets you push into the curves.

The top maple deck is attached to what looks like another curved metal deck (called the "composite spring"). This configuration makes carving on asphalt feel similar to surfing!

Electric Skateboards as an Alternative Transportation Solution

By Action Isle • Sep 13th, 2008 • Category: Motorized

SkateElectric not only sells awesome electric skateboards, but is pioneering what they call to be a "green, riders lifestyle movement."

"Skate Electric is a brand which is not just about embracing board riding culture. Its also about pushing for a greener world for us now and future generations to come. As renewable energy generated at wind and surf farms etc HAS to be a better option than a power station, Skate Electric will be partnering up with a renewable supplier as we want our customers to switch providers so your board can really become a GREEN MACHINE."

They invest 1% of every board sale in a renewable energy company, as their way of supporting a greener world.

This company is based in the UK, and while electric skateboards aren't currently legal for city use, the founder of Skate Electric says,

"Although, Skate Electric at the moment is promoting use of our boards on private land, I want to, as the founder of Skate Electric, make the electric skateboard road legal for city use. The Electric Bike is road legal in the UK and can run on the same power output.

The UK has an opportunity to embrace alternative transport solutions and give the Electric Skateboard the classification it needs so we can get London moving and out of their cars!!!!!!!"

Skate Electric currently offers 3 models of electric skateboards.

More Skateboarders Swapping For Longboards?

By Action Isle • Aug 21st, 2008 • Category: Everything Else

Longboarding
Image: Longboard 5

Longboarding has been in the shadow of skateboarding for some time now, but that may all change as more skateboarders are seemingly swapping their shortboard for a longboard.

"Although no definitive numbers are available to quantify longboarding's growth, manufacturers report steady increases in sales. Even new skateboard manufacturers, such as the unfortunately named snowboard builder Never Summer, are entering the market. And manufacturers and retailers love that many users own a variety of boards for different uses."

Link: More skaters switching to longboards

Why would a skater switch to longboarding?

Longboarding isn't just about tricks. Most people can't ride a skateboard without being harassed to do a kickflip or some other kind of flippy trick. Longboarding still has it's tricks, but you don't have to be able to do one to ride one. Some people ride longboards for transportation, some bomb downhill, some do sliding, some do fancy footwork, some work on tricks, and some do everything. You also can be any age (as long as you can move well) to ride one. On top of all this, longboarding is easier than skateboarding, so frustrated skateboarders can find it a great alternative.

The Motorized Board Has Evolved | Introducing the MotoXBoard

By Action Isle • Aug 4th, 2008 • Category: Motorized

There seems to have been little advancement in motorized mountainboards and off road boards over the past years. Their are many skeletons left over from motorized boards that have come and gone, and there are very few that have a solid foothold. With how things are currently in the motorized board world, you'll find many junky imported motorized mountainboards, and very few ones of quality. The choices are limited, and their are very few that stand out from the crowd.

MotoXBoard | Motorized Off Road Board/Mountainboard

The makers of the MotoXBoard are paving the way for a new breed of motorized off road boards. One that is both functional and fun. The MotoXBoard is the product of 15 years of tinkering. What sets this board apart from the rest is it's unique design. Most motorized off road boards have suspension and trucks like a mountainboard or skateboard, as well as a chain powered rear wheel. The MotoXBoard has a large powered wheel placed in the middle of the board, fully independent floater suspension, and a rear mounted handle bar. The rear handle bar provides extra balance support when things get rough, and is where the rider controls the throttle and braking.

Three Wheeled Electric Skateboard

By Action Isle • Jun 30th, 2008 • Category: Boards, Motorized

It's called the Electric Scorpion and it is a three wheeled electric skateboard. Why three wheels? This electric skateboard has the one wheel in the front powered by the motor, making it more efficient than 4 wheeled electric skateboards that only have one wheel on one side powered by the motor. The front wheel has less friction, and with only one wheel in the front, the board can be lighter than most 4 wheeled electric skateboards.

The LA Electric Skatebike: a Bike and a Skateboard in one

By Action Isle • Jun 20th, 2008 • Category: Scooters

LA SkatebikeCheck out this electric creation called the LA Skatebike. It has handlebars, brakes, and a front wheel like a bike, but in place of the seat, pedals, and back wheel is a skateboard. It's like a scooter, but it has a touch of skateboard added to the mix.

The LA Skatebike has a 250 watt motor, making it capable of going around 13 mph.

If you run out of juice, or want to get a bit of exercise, you can also propel yourself by kicking, like you would on a scooter.

Mountainboard – A Large Wheeled Off Road Skateboard

By Action Isle • May 2nd, 2008 • Category: Boards

With skateboarding you are confined to hard surfaces. Sticks, rocks, cracks, and even small holes are mortal enemies to the skateboard. The wheels of a skateboard just can't handle them.

Mountainboard

If you want to experience off road skateboarding at it's finest, check out a mountainboard. Also sometimes referred to as an all-terrain board, a dirtboard, grassboard, or a landboard.

To make it simple, a mountainboard is basically a larger version of a skateboard adapted for off road riding. Big off road tires, bigger deck (bigger than a skateboard that is), footstraps, and trucks with shocks are all common on most mountainboards.

Snowboarders often mountainboard in the summer so they can continue to improve their skills. Mountainboarding can be a fun sport to try for anyone who skateboards, longboards, wakeboards, or does any other board sport.

With mountainboarding you can ride on much more than just hard surfaces.

Altered Electric Skateboard M4 800

By Action Isle • May 1st, 2008 • Category: Boards, Motorized

I've seen many electric skateboards before, but not many have off road tires like this electric skateboard made by Exkate.

The Altered M4 800 has the power and durability needed to go on or off road. The pneumatic tires make it able to handle rough terrain. No need to worry about rocks or sticks in the way of your wheels with this board.

With the wireless handheld accelerator and brake the rider can easily control their speed or accelerate up to an impressive 20mph. Not too many electric skateboards with off-road tires can say that.
